Series of 30 drawings
Watercolour, graphite and black ink
40 x 30 cm. each
2005

In these Society Portraits, Diana Larrea combines aspects of popular culture with those of classical portraiture. Her subjects have included personalities from gossip magazines, such as actors, singers and European royal families. These drawings, made with coloured pencil, watercolour and black ink, possess an expressive, atmospheric sense with which I beatify her subjects. Her sitters often have the aura of cult figures. She stylise the members of the Spanish royal family in the same glamorous manners as the singers and actors she draws. Along with these works, Larrea tries to revive and update a figurative painting tradition.
