On the occasion of the 17th International Biennale of Sport in Art, Diana Larrea chose to focus on a sports discipline that has numerous historical and symbolic connotations in our collective visual memory. This sport is fencing, the art of defence and attack that brings to mind a complete epic iconography based on those traditional combats between illustrious gentlemen who fought heroically against the enemy, sacrificing their own lives.

With this series of drawings the artist wished to create an allegorical reconsideration of the eternal individual challenge that human beings have perpetually had to face through their own imagined phantoms and monsters. The drawings represent a personal revision of the myth of Saint George as occurring in a bullring, right at the brutal moment of the duel between man and beast.
