HAL
Video-sculpture
2004

Financed by Fundación Telefónica.

In this project, Diana Larrea proposed to build a model of HAL, the famous artificial life entity from “2001: A Space Odyssey”. With the aim of faithfully imitating the outer appearance of the authentic HAL, this installation consisted of 13 television monitors set into a black, metallic structure. The software simulated HAL’s behaviour and allowed for different kinds of interaction with the public. With this proposed remake, Larrea alluded to the myth of the creature that rebels against its creator. This universal myth has arisen in numerous narratives of classical mythology and in literature, including Oedipus and Frankenstein.
